How and why Chlorine Dioxide and LOTUS generators can protect you from Legionella

Water treatment to prevent the proliferation of legionellosis bacteria is one of the main challenges with regard to hot water recirculation networks in water-sanitary systems. In this field the use of chlorine dioxide (ClO2) has replaced that of chlorine (hypochlorous acid) in water treatment and disinfection by now, first of all because of the many advantages brought by a biocidal and antiviral power definitely higher as well as independent from the pH of the water to treat. Indeed, chlorine dioxide is the safest and the most effective answer against the risk of legionellosis, especially in cooling towers and Hot Water systems, by affecting and breaking down, besides the pathogens, even the biofilm, a bacterial aggregation that is the natural habitat in which both Legionella bacteria, the cause of legionellosis, and other species of bacteria proliferate. Using chlorine dioxide in disinfection of water has demonstrated to be no less than 10 times more effective against bacteria, algae, fungi and viruses.

Chlorine dioxide is not aggressive toward pipes and its effect is longer-lasting, up to several days, and over a wider area from the injection point, ensuring the treatment of a whole plumbing system, even by using a small amount of product. Unlike chlorine, there is no formation of potentially cancer-causing by-products from disinfection, and for all these reasons use of chlorine dioxide is safe even for drinking water treatment.

Still, the real challenge remains the risk of legionellosis, one of the main worldwide problems in water disinfection. The LOTUS disinfection systems are thus the EMEC answer to this challenge, offering the safest and the most effective solutions against Legionella bacterium for every application.

Legionella in 5 points:

  • Legionella is a pathogenic group of bacteria that cause Legionellosis in humans, a group of illnesses including Legionnaires’ disease and Pontiac fever.
  • Legionella is a waterborne disease, and so objects and locations such as swimming pools, spas, hot tubs, water coolers and fountains are at greater risk of contamination.
  • Water contaminated with Legionella can become aerosolised, tiny droplets of water in the air. Aerosolised water infected with Legionella can then enter and infect the lungs. This can cause Legionnaires’ disease and, depending on the severity of the infection, can prove fatal.
  • Worldwide, the most common cause of illness come from the Legionella pneumophila species.
  • Species are commonly found in soil and aquatic environments.

The EMEC LOTUS systems were born indeed from the research and from the will to design and create systems for chlorine dioxide production capable of meeting any need, thanks to the versatility of the controlled pressure or atmospheric pressure (AIR models) generators.

The advanced chlorine dioxide generators of LOTUS series are especially recommended for reduction, control, and prevention of the risk of legionellosis in the field of domestic hot water (DHW) and in cooling towers. Production of chlorine dioxide has been made safe and stable in time through a new system expressly designed to offer a turnkey product, easy to install and easy to manage thanks to a simplified user interface.

ClO2 in its pure form exists at room temperature as a gas and dissolves in water. The EMEC LOTUS range of Chlorine Dioxide Generators are designed so there is no requirement to handle this as a gas, but instead two liquid “precursor” chemicals, Hydrochloric Acid (HCl) and Sodium Chlorite (NaClO2), react together to form the chlorine dioxide required inside a reaction chamber. Multifunction valves on the injection points ensure the security of the reaction chamber.

The EMEC LOTUS systems can dose proportional to the circulating water or based on the measurement set point. EMEC LOTUS does not store the chlorine dioxide, therefore there is no chlorine dioxide gas or concentrated solutions outside of the process application.

Their elegant covers preserve the cleanliness of their inner components and protect them from accidental damages.

Each LOTUS system can be connected to the internet through Wi-Fi, Ethernet or 2G/3G modem connection (depending on the configuration) and can be remotely controlled with ERMES, the exclusive online management system designed by EMEC, accessible from everywhere with a smartphone or a tablet by using a whatever browser, without the need of extra software.

The EMEC LOTUS range includes the controlled pressure generators of the LOTUS MAXI, LOTUS MINI and LOTUS EASY series, and the atmospheric pressure generators of the LOTUS AIR series:
